Montreal times

F1 prac #1 fastest: David Coulthard, 1:15.407
F1 prac #1 all-but-one slowest: Jarno Trulli, 1:18.465
F1 prac #1 slowest: Alex Yoong, 1:19.050

F1 prac #2 fastest: Michael Schumacher, 1:13.395
F1 prac #2 all-but-one slowest: Eddie Irvine, 1:16.267
F1 prac #2 slowest: Alex Yoong, 1:17.005

F1 qual fastest: Juan Montoya, 1:12.836
F1 qual all-but-one slowest: Mark Webber, 1:15.508
F1 qual slowest: Alex Yoong, 1:17.347

(Added all-but-one slowest because Yoong is crap, as you can see in
the [relatively] huge difference in times.)

CART prac #1 fastest: Cristiano da Matta, 1:20.539

Means F1 is going 7.703 seconds faster when compared to qualifying,
and 7.144 seconds to practice.

Looking forward to qualifying, those should be faster if the weather
stays the same. By the way, it seems that some drivers and engineers
were right about CART being about 5 seconds slower.

Friday morning highlights

I edited down the running commentary from www.cart.com from 423 lines to 43.

For best results, try reading from the bottom up.

=================================

1h 31 min Cristiano da Matta(#6) improved to P1 with a time of 1:20.593 s.

1h 30 min CHECKERED FLAG

1h 22 min Junqueira is going for a rear ride height change, rear shock
rebound changes and different front springs and dampers.

1h 18 min Carpentier is not happy. He’s had a series of traction control,
brake and engine problems that have limited him to a handful of complete
laps. Team: "If you had finished that lap you would have been 3rd quick."
Carpentier: "Yeah, but we can’t finish a lap."

1h 17 min Tony Kanaan goes for a quick spin but keeps it running.

1h 15 min Bruno Junqueira(#4) improved to P1 with a time of 1:20.730 s.

1h 12 min Vasser is going for a front spring change.

1h 10 min GREEN FLAG

1h 05 min RED FLAG Tora Takagi has tagged the wall at Turn 9. Damage appears
minor, but he’s stalled the motor.

1h 02 min Nakano goes bounding through the Turn 3/4 chicane.

1h 01 min Fernandez went pounding over the curbs at one of the chicanes.
Team: "Let’s have a look underneath and make sure we didn’t knock anything
loose."

59 min Carpentier: "I’m locking the rear brakes like crazy." Team: "The tire
pressures are a couple of pounds too high, that’s probably the cause."

51 min Cristiano da Matta(#6) improved to P1 with a time of 1:22.238 s.

44 min Dario Franchitti(#27) improved to P1 with a time of 1:22.372 s.

43 min Carpentier goes for a spin at the Turn 10 hairpin. He keeps it
running and continues.

40 min Toranosuke Takagi(#5X) improved to P1 with a time of 1:22.395 s.

40 min Dario Franchitti(#27) improved to P1 with a time of 1:22.909 s.

35 min Jimmy Vasser(#8X) improved to P1 with a time of 1:24.115 s.

33 min Kenny Brack(#12) improved to P1 with a time of 1:24.228 s.

30 min There’s a good crowd on hand today; the Quebecois have a long love
affair with motorsports. It doesn’t hurt to be one of the most cosmopolitan
cities in North America, expect a good number of Americans to make the short
journey to Sourthern Quebec.

30 min Shinji Nakano(#52) improved to P1 with a time of 1:24.986 s.

27 min The Player’s team believes Carpentier’s problem with traction control
is related to his being out on rain tires, which have a slightly different
diameter than slicks. They believe the problem will go away once he is done
bedding in brakes and changes to slick tires.

27 min Toranosuke Takagi(#5X) improved to P1 with a time of 1:24.048 s.

25 min Carpentier is having trouble with traction control and the pit lane
speed limiter. He had the same problem all weekend at Road America last
week.

24 min The pit lane at this track is significantly narrower than most on the
Cart circuit; for this event the pit speed limit is only 35mph.

24 min Mario Dominguez (R)(#55X) improved to P1 with a time of 1:25.269 s.

20 min The Tecate team is asking Fernandez to "lay some rubber" when he
leaves his pit box; just like a drag racer they want him to do a burnout to
begin building up rubber. Rubber on the tires grips rubber on the pavement
very well.

20 min Jimmy Vasser(#8X) improved to P1 with a time of 1:25.343 s.

17 min Michel Jourdain(#9X) improved to P1 with a time of 1:26.522 s.
17 min Mario Dominguez (R)(#55X) improved to P1 with a time of 1:26.995 s.

16 min Michel Jourdain(#9X) improved to P1 with a time of 1:27.766 s.

15 min Mario Dominguez (R)(#55X) improved to P1 with a time of 1:28.522 s.

15 min Cristiano da Matta(#6X) improved to P1 with a time of 1:32.024 s.

14 min Dario Franchitti will get a drive through penalty for speeding on pit
lane.

12 min Tracy was on rain tires when he spun; many drivers will bed in new
brakes and warm up the car with rain tires in order to conserve slick tires
for qualifying and the race.

8 min RED FLAG Paul Tracy exits the pits, goes four turns and spins. He’s
stalled in the middle of the track at Turn 5.

7 min Paul Tracy makes it about 4 corners and goes for a spin. He’s stalled
it.

8 min Scott Dixon(#44) improved to P1 with a time of 1:31.890 s.

8 min Christian Fittipaldi(#11X) improved to P1 with a time of 1:34.803 s.

7 min Paul Tracy rumbles down pit lane, now releases the pit speed limiter
and roars into the Turn 1-2 complex.

4 min Everybody has gone out for an exploration lap, and everybody returns
to the pits to check for leaks and loose fittings. Now Fittipaldi heads back
out for hot laps.

0 min GREEN FLAG

Good morning from Montreal! It”s currently 61°F with blue skies as we get
ready for the first session.

Did they put up a pitwall in front of the garages?

Damn live timing decision…

Shall I stay or should I wait until I get home to watch it on TV?  Maybe
I’ll bail with 15 minute to go. :-)

Massive crowd in Montreal

The place is absolutely packed for Friday. Someone in the Speed Channel
team glibly mentioned the number 60,000.

What's this mean?

Some technogenius want to explain to me in layman’s terms what Tagliani was
saying here, following his 2nd place on Sunday.

….
Tagliani, looking for his first career win, matched his career-best
finish, and earned his second podium of the year.

"The only mistake we made was putting in a seventh gear that was pulling
low revs," said Tagliani, who moved up from third on the starting grid. "But
at the speed the car was handling good and I might have been able to pass
Cristiano if I had a shorter seventh gear.
….

Thanks

Narrow NA road tracks…

Is there any particular reason why North American road tracks are so much
narrower than European (or anywhere else) road tracks?

I’d imagine that tracks like Mid-Ohio or Road America would be at least a
meter wider and more likely 2-3 meters wider if they had been made in
Europe.

Even when Don Panoz repaved and widened Mosport he didn’t really widen it
that much – it’s still a 2 wide track.  It couldn’t have cost Don that
much more to make it Euro style wide.
