Speed Channel hires Jon Beekhuis

For their ALMS coverage. Huh? They have veteran Sports Car racer and pit
reporter Calvin Fish doing CART, and veteran CART driver (sort of) and pit
reporter Jon Beekhuis doing ALMS? That’s a weird one. Probably a seniority
issue, but methinks the two crews should work a trade.

Watching over my Kingdom

I felt it important that those faithful to the CART cause and those
who participate on RASC in the original spirit of the charter know
that I have been monitoring the newsgroup for the good of all
involved.

It is my creation and domain, after all.

Though as of late Ihave been using the moniker "Wascally Wabbit" to
police the area, I am considering returning once again as myself and
under my original posting persona.

All will be as it should soon around here.

I will  be pissed if  this is  true.  i havent  missed a race in years.

Another Way To Enjoy The Season

Hello All,

It’s been a while since I’ve participated in any discussion
around here, but I’ve been lurking. I’ve come up with another
way to enjoy the CART racing season, especially now that
the ChampCar.com Fantasy contest seems to be stagnant. It’s
basically a pool in which you select any five drivers, but you
are limited by a "salary cap". I’ve included my rules below
for anyone’s perusal. There’s no charge to enter (all you win
are bragging rights) and I’ll email results on a weekly basis.
I’m hoping to have my website set up in the not-too-distant
future. Please keep in mind that this is basically my first
attempt at this, and anyone having any suggestions or helpful
criticism is welcome to contact me.

The one thing that I wish I had done was taken the time to
merge CART and IRL drivers because of all the crossover, but
it’s too late to do that now. Anyway, the rules are below. Have
fun!

2002 Champcar (CART) Racing Pool        Revised 21-Feb-02

Pick any five drivers using the following point values. Your
salary cap is 15,000 points – when picking your
six drivers
you must not exceed your cap. There cannot be two identical
teams; when two identical teams are entered, the first
participants to enter their team shall have the right to that
particular lineup, and any other entrants need to change at
least one driver. When selecting your team you may also
purchase up to three DNFs of each kind at the value listed
below. Your team will not start accumulating negative points
for DNFs until the DNFs you have purchased are used up. This
is how the driver/team combinations and their values have
shaken out as of the end of the Sneak Preview at Laguna Seca.

Car #   Driver          Team           Package               Value
  39    M. Andretti     Motorola       Honda/Reynard         5000
  12    K. Brack        TCG Racing     Toyota/Lola           4800
   6    C. da Matta     Newman/Haas    Toyota/Lola           4600
  27    D. Franchitti   TKG            Honda/Reynard         4400
   8    J. Vasser       Rahal          Ford-Cosworth/Lola    4200
  26    P. Tracy        TKGreen        Honda/Reynard         4000
   7    S. Dixon        PWR Racing     Toyota/Lola           3800
  10    T. Kanaan       Mo Nunn        Honda/Reynard         3600
  11    C. Fittipaldi   Newman/Haas    Toyota/Lola           3400
  32    P. Carpentier   Players        Ford-Cosworth/Reynard 3200
  22    M. Papis        Sigma          Ford-Cosworth/Lola    3000
  33    A. Tagliani     Players        Ford-Cosworth/Reynard 2800
   9    M. Jourdain Jr. Rahal          Ford-Cosworth/Lola    2600
   4    B. Junqueira    TCG Racing     Toyota/Lola           2400
  51    A. Fernandez    Fernandez      Honda/Lola            2200
   5    T. Takagi       Walker         Toyota/Reynard        2000
  17    O. Servia       PWR Racing     Toyota/Lola           1900
  20    T. Bell         Patrick        Toyota/Reynard        1800
  52    S. Nakano       Fernandez      Honda/Lola            1600
  16    M. Dominguez    Herdez         Ford-Cosworth/Lola    1400

Contact DNF: 200    Mechanical DNF: 100

There are many eligible drivers not competing in the series this
season. I have values of several listed below who may be able to
land a ride before the season starts. If any other driver(s) not
listed manage to land a seat, send me an email and I’ll fire them
through my evaluation program and give you a value.

Johnny Herbert       3000
Roberto Moreno       2800
Casey Mears          2200
Memo Gidley          2100
Bryan Herta          2000
Buddy Rice           1800
Michael Krumm        1500
Luiz Garcia Jr.      1500
Max Wilson           1200

Driver values have been calculated using a (very) complex formula
that includes their overall career performance combined with their
current team performance and last year’s individual performance.
In cases where there is not a whole lot of data available (Casey
Mears, for instance) the value may be slightly skewed one way or
another, but I’m sticking to the values I have posted. Obviously
all rookies are not be the same value; for instance, a rookie
driving for Bobby Rahal will be valued more highly than a rookie
coming in to drive for Sigma.

If you choose a driver and he is injured during the season,
scoring shall continue using the selected substitute driver in
the originally designated car. If no replacement driver is
appointed, the participant may select a temporary replacement
driver for as many events as the original driver misses. The
temporary replacement driver may not be higher in value than
the originally selected driver. For example if you select Alex
Tagliani and he is injured for two races, and Team Players
elects not to run a replacement driver, the participant may
select a replacement driver of equal or lower value for those
two races only. This is the only instance that you may have an
identical driver lineup to another participant. As soon as the
injured driver returns to competition, your lineup reverts to
the original configuration.

Scoring:

Friday Pole: 1   Saturday Pole: 1   Most Laps Led: 1

P1: 20   P2: 16   P3: 14   P4: 12   P5: 10   P6: 8   P7: 6
P8: 5    P9: 4    P10: 3   P11: 2   P12: 1

DNF caused by contact (as scored on the official CART     – 6 pts
scoresheet) NOTE: Includes being scored as “off course”

DNF caused by anything other than contact (a “mechanical  - 3 pts
failure”):

Scoring for pole, most laps led, and positions P1 through P12
doubles for 500 mile events.

Results will be posted by email shortly after the completion
of each event.

The deadline for all entries for this year’s competition is
Midnight MST Thursday, March 7, 2002.

There is no prize for winning other than good old bragging
rights. Similarly there is no entry fee – this is simply
another way to enjoy the racing season.
