1.5 mile high banked ovals have no place on the schedule of ANY CART race
— or IRL race for that matter.
They are simply too small for the speeds that are achieved. Period.
It’s funny reading all these posts from the IRL and Nascar folks who can’t
seem to grasp CART’s decision here. They seem to imply that 210-215 mph IS
a safe speed on these tracks. Well, I’ve got news for you. IT ISN’T.
The IRL dodged a HUGE BULLET Saturday night. No drivers died and the tire
did not go into the crowd. Compare the location of this wreck and the one
in North Carolina. It’s the same darn wreck – and the same darn result.
Teathers and catch fencing DON’T work when you have cars going that fast,
in that confined an area.
Most of the CHUMPS have been on a crusade against this Texas race ever
since it was announced. I didn’t want the race to take place. Had I gone to
Atlanta, I would only have sat directly behind a catch fence to avoid the
flying tire issue. Same thing with Texas – whether it’s CART or the IRL
running there.
The bottom line is that open wheel cars running over 200 mph DO NOT BELONG
ON THESE TRACKS.
Imagine the headlines coming out of Atlanta had that tire gone into the
stands where people were sitting. Imagine how BAD it would look when they
played that wreck opposite the North Carolina wreck where 3 people were
sadly killed. ANYONE who sits in T4 at an IRL event on a 1.5 mile speedway
hasn’t been paying much attention….
I applaud CART’s decision. It was a GOOD day for the drivers. They’re all
alive. And so are all the fans and marshals and flagmen and everyone else
who would’ve been at the track in Texas. The racing Gods were screaming at
CART, and for ONCE, the powers that be listened.
CART will have hell to pay in the eyes of SOME fans… so be it. The
business side will take care of itself. CART blew it when Rahal lobbied
this deal through last year.
Maybe if all these so called FANS who are bitching and moaning right now
had actually BEEN at MIS when Fernandez’s tire went over the wall, maybe
they’d have a little more respect for CART’s decision. The most ardent CART
fans voiced their views on this race BEFORE CART pulled the plug. I’m glad
the race was not held.
