To all you Brits here’s a response I got after a particularly venomous email
I sent them (after Detroit):
Dear Paul
There appears to be some confusion with regards to the scheduling of the
CART races. British Eurosport acquired the rights for this year and intended
to broadcast same night delayed or live coverage (whenever possible) of all
the races. However due to commitments to Euro 2000 and Olympics, some races
would be shown later. Eurosport International will broadcast CART extended
highlights on Wednesday evenings.
We are taking the view that one or two might get out live towards the end of
the season if the schedules allow. We did cover the Japan race live and
intended to transmit the Portland and Nazareth races but unfortunately these
were postponed due to inclement weather and Euro 2000 meant we couldn’t do
Detroit at all (June 18). Cleveland did go out as billed last Sunday and we
will do Toronto as planned next week.
The problem I think is that Eurosport did CART live last year and viewers
expect it live again. But we can’t disrupt the Sunday night schedule on
British to accommodate live CART due to contractual obligations with other
rights holders.
I am sorry that our scheduling disappointed you. We do try to cover all
events fully. However sometimes due to coinciding events we can only show
what our schedules will allow.
I can understand this can be frustrating and can only apologise and hope
that we satisfy your needs next time.
Hmmm. They’ve skirted the issue here given that two races in a row the
coverage has been cut from 1.5 hours down to 60 minutes with probably only
40 minutes of actual race viewing. Add to that that they just cut out huge
swathes of laps with no explanations as to what was going on (when did Paul
Tracy retire from Cleveland?) and you get the distinct impression that they
couldn’t give a toss about CART. Not good. ;-(
Paul.
